Xiaomi has announced its new flagship phone, the Mi 8 — and yes, it’s the company’s first phone with a notch. The Mi 8 has a 6.21-inch OLED screen from Samsung, wrapping around a fairly large notch that houses a 20-megapixel selfie camera.

Not that this will deter Android fans from checking it out. The Mi 8 boasts the latest Snapdragon 845 processor, an FHD+ (2248 x 1080 pixels) AMOLED display, dual 12-megapixel rear cameras with AI-powered features for improving your pictures, and a 20-megapixel snapper in the front.
The phone has a four-way curved glass back panel and an aluminum frame. Inside there’s Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon 845 processor, and the new 12-megapixel dual camera setup apparently scores 105 on DxOMark, for what that’s worth. Xiaomi also says that this is the first phone ever to use dual-frequency GPS, which is supposed to give more accurate location data.
On the display front, the Mi 8 features a 6.21-inch ‘Full Screen’ display and uses a Samsung AMOLED panel. As expected, the smartphone comes with a display notch. It packs a screen resolution of 1080×2240 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18.7:9. The display on the Mi 8 supports up to 600 nit brightness and comes with 88.5 per cent screen-to-body ratio. The Mi 8 sports two 12-megapixel sensors with AI capabilities. “It is the best camera we’ve ever had,” Xiaomi said during China launch keynote.
The dual cameras are AI-enabled and come with dual pixel autofocus and AI portraits. It comes with AI scene detection and video editing. With Mi 8, the company is introducing new Studio Lighting which is AI-enhanced portrait photography. The Mi 8 also packs a 20-megapixel front camera with Infrared face unlock. The Chinese company claims that the Infrared face unlock will work even in the dark. The front camera comes with features like f/2.0 aperture, AI portrait selfies, and AI Beauty. Xiaomi Mi 8 also packs Dual frequency GPS which the company touts won’t let users get lost. “It eliminates interference from buildings and reduces signal delays, increasing the accuracy of navigating with Mi 8,” the company said.
